Analyse ausgewählter physiognomischer Texte im 'Buch der Natur' Konrad von Mengenbergs

Zusammenfassung

Die Physiognomik versucht seit Jahrtausenden, anhand ihrer körperlichen Merkmale auf die Charaktereigenschaften von Menschen zu schließen.
Untersuchungsgegenstand dieser Studie sind die physiognomischen Ausführungen in Konrad von Mengenbergs „buch von den natürlichen dingen“. Diese Arbeit soll zeigen, wie Physiognomik im Mittelalter betrieben wurde: Welche methodischen Verfahren und Begründungszusammenhänge prägten die mittelalterliche Physiognomik und welches Idealbild lag ihr zugrunde?
Nach einer kurzen Einführung zur Physiognomik, ihrem Ursprung in der griechischen Antike und der Tradierung des antiken Wissens ins Mittelalter soll sich der Beantwortung dieser Fragen mit Hilfe der formalen und inhaltlichen Analyse einiger ausgewählter physiognomischer Charakterportraits aus dem Buch der Natur gewidmet werden. Hierbei liegt der Fokus vor allem auf der Analyse von sechs Charakterportraits, die zur weiteren Analyse zunächst ins Neuhochdeutsche übersetzt werden. Abschließend soll die Frage beantwortet werden, welche praktischen Konsequenzen
die Physiognomik auf die höfische Gesellschaft des Mittelalters hatte.
Grundlage dieser Arbeit bildet die Pfeiffer-Edition von Mengenbergs Buch der Natur aus dem Jahr 1861.
